Mark-ocracy

Yesterday we (ana, dato, holger and me) were at the CUM (University of Extremadura) to give a talk about Debian in general and QA in particular.

We were talking about how things work within free software, we talked about do-ocracy and I coined the expression Mark-ocracy. It was funny :)

Mark-ocracy: to do the things that Mark wants to do.

Once more we are fighting ourselves instead of joining to defeat our real enemies.

I, in spite of being a Debian user and fan myself, encourage people (specially newcomers) to use Ubuntu.

There are things in Ubuntu that I don’t like. Ubuntu has its defects, but not more than gnuLinEx or any other distro has, but it also has a lot of good things. Thanks to those things, Ubuntu has brought a lot of new users to the free software world, while adhering to its free roots.

Should Ubuntu be a mark-ocracy, that wouldn’t necessarily be worse than gnuLinEx’s improvise-ocracy or Debian elitism-ocracy. It’s free software what is produced, and that’s a good thing. Take what you want, get rid of what you don’t need/like.

It’s sad these civil wars happen so frecuently in the free software world.

Let’s please stop egocracy.

Best regards,
Alberto.

Thanks for your comment Alberto and for coming to the talk.
Obviously it is a good thing Ubuntu exists, and I also think it has a lot of good things and that is good for the free software community.

Hope to see you soon!
